TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. These joints are located right in front of your ears and on each side of your face. The TMJs connect your lower jawbone to your skull and help you chew and speak.

Chances are, you probably never heard about temporomandibular joints (TMJ) until you or someone you know, started having issues with them. If so, you’re definitely not alone. According to recent estimates, up to ten million Americans suffer from TMJ disorders.

In reality, however, every time you talk, chew or swallow, you are, you guessed it, using your TMJs. However, if you have temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), those simple movements can be incredibly painful for you.

Our experts at ReVive Integrative Wellness have been successfully treating TMJ pain for our patients for years. Learning to recognize the symptoms of TMJ pain is the first step in treating it.

Common Symptoms of TMJ Pain

Some warning signs and symptoms of TMJ issues include:

  • Tenderness or pain in your jaw.
  • TMJ pain in one or both temporomandibular joints.
  • Sharp pain in and around your ear.
  • Aching pain in the face.
  • Your joints lock up and make it hard to open or shut your mouth.
  • Chewing becomes a lot more difficult and painful.

People with TMJ disorder frequently make a clicking or grating sound when they open their mouths or chew. However, if your jaw clicking causes no pain or restriction of movement, you probably don’t need TMJ treatment.

Tips for Relieving TMJ Pain

Living with TMJ pain can be pretty tough. The most common TMJ treatment options are home care and avoiding things that might trigger it. Fortunately, there are some things you can do on your own to provide some short-term relief.

  • Try to eat softer foods and stay away from crunchier ones like popcorn, nuts, etc.
  • Try taking ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain reliever in moderation.
  • Keep your jaw from moving excessively or needlessly, such as when chewing gum.
  • When you’re still, set your jaw with your teeth slightly spaced.
  • Use ice or heat packs to temporarily relieve TMJ pain.
